Hello,
Thank you for your interest in the Alabama Paleontological Society. Our organization consists of a wide variety of individuals who share an appreciation of fossils and the natural sciences.
We would like to invite you to come to our monthly meetings to get to know our members and to enjoy the variety of programs and speakers we have scheduled. Programs may be on fossils, geology, African animals, the Amazon, birding, Alabama spiders and snakes, or a host of other subjects related to the natural sciences. Members and guests often bring samples of their latest fossil discoveries for informal ôshow and tellö sessions.
Monthly field trips to collect fossils and other activities are another benefit enjoyed by our members.
We would like to emphasize that we collect for our personal enjoyment and not for any commercial purposes. We often have the opportunity to work with various museums, institutions, and schools to share our interest in fossils.
The Alabama Paleontological Society exists for the following purposes and benefits of its members:
1. Collecting fossils for personal enjoyment.
2. Promoting cooperation between amateur and professional paleontologists and geologists to their mutual benefit, specifically relating to scientific research and education.
3. Educating its members and the general public in areas of natural history relating to paleontology and geology.
4. Assisting in endeavors relating to the preservation and conservation of paleontological sites and specimens.
In order for you to get to know us and our organization better, we ask that you attend a combination of at least three meetings or field trips before you join, or be sponsored by an existing member.
Field trips are reserved for members and personal guests of members to protect sites from exploitation or over-collection.
The APS has regular meetings at 7:00 p.m. the first Monday of each month, in the conference building at the Birmingham Zoo.
Please call either of us if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you at our future meetings.
Sincerely,
Bruce Relihan
